News that the Golden Isles YMCA will permanently close its Brunswick location on September 6 has prompted an emotional response from many residents who say the facility has been an important part of the community for decades.
The YMCA says continued financial challenges made operating the current facility unsustainable, despite efforts to find partnerships that could keep it open. While the organization says it hopes to establish a smaller YMCA presence in Glynn County in the future, many members say they'll miss much more than just a place to work out.
One member praised the facility's EGYM equipment, writing, "The EGym there is so well used and amazing. Effective for those no matter their level of fitness—it builds you up."
Others reflected on years of memories. "Loved it for so many years," one longtime member wrote. "Would like to see someone take it over so we can have a facility in Brunswick."
Several commenters expressed concern about the programs that will disappear along with the facility. One former instructor said, "I loved teaching and the members... It could have been such a great Y." Another resident noted that the loss of child care and after-school programs "will really hurt some families in Brunswick."
Many also voiced hope that something new can emerge. After hearing the YMCA is exploring a smaller future location, one member responded with two simple words that captured the mood of many: "Lots of prayers."

While the current Golden Isles YMCA has operated for 13 years, several readers pointed out that the building previously served as the YWCA, with families remembering swim lessons, after-school care, and community activities dating back to the 1990s and earlier.
Whatever replaces it—whether another YMCA, a nonprofit recreation center, or a privately operated fitness facility—many residents agree that Glynn County would benefit from a welcoming, affordable place where people of all ages can exercise, learn, and connect.
