Brunswick is about to smell like stew and sound like Tom Petty. Stewbilee takes over the waterfront Saturday with car shows, live music, and more Brunswick stew than you could reasonably eat — while Friday night brings Petty classics to The Ritz and jazz to Glynn Academy. Add in an oyster roast, princess tea, camellias in bloom, and even a little tea-leaf fortune reading, and this might be one of the most eclectic weekends we’ve had all year.

Kut-Kwick Landmark to Be Demolished for Waterfront Redevelopment
A longtime piece of Brunswick’s industrial history is coming down.
Torras Properties announced plans to demolish the original Kut-Kwick Corp. manufacturing facility on Newcastle Street, clearing the site for a future mixed-use residential and commercial development along the waterfront near Brunswick Landing Marina.
The building has stood for nearly 80 years and produced more than 6,000 specialized industrial mowers since Bob Torras Sr. acquired the company in the late 1970s. Founded in the 1940s, Kut-Kwick built a reputation for heavy-duty slope mowers used on highways, airports, rights-of-way, and other demanding terrain. While manufacturing has shifted over time, the company remains active locally, now focused primarily on parts and service — and exploring potential growth opportunities with an investment group.
“This is an important and thoughtful step forward,” said Daren Pietsch, president of Torras Properties and Kut-Kwick, acknowledging the bittersweet nature of removing a facility tied to generations of Brunswick workers. “We believe the Torras family’s long-term vision will represent a meaningful upgrade for our community.”
After demolition, the site will be landscaped and grassed to create what developers describe as a cleaner gateway into downtown.
The broader redevelopment has already received rezoning approval from Brunswick City Commissioners. However, debate continues over a requested height waiver that would allow a 65-foot dry boat storage facility — exceeding the city’s typical 45-foot limit. Commissioners deferred that decision last fall after nearby Riverfront Plaza property owners raised concerns about noise and notice. Developers have said the boat storage component would help generate early capital to support the larger project.
For now, demolition marks the first visible step in what could become one of downtown’s most significant waterfront transformations — closing a chapter on one of Brunswick’s longest-standing manufacturing brands while opening the door to a new phase of development.
