St. Patrick’s weekend has arrived in the Golden Isles, and there’s a lot happening across Brunswick, St. Simons, and beyond. Georgia’s famous Peaches to the Beaches yard sale rolls through downtown with miles of treasure hunting, the island pubs are gearing up for St. Patrick’s celebrations, and events across the area range from Irish dancers at the Ritz to Revolutionary War living history and waterfront markets. Plus, a rumor making the rounds locally has people wondering if Rural King might be headed to Glynn Place Mall — and what that could mean for the future of the space.

💬 Community Conversation

A rumor spreading through Brunswick has people buzzing: is Rural King taking over the old Sears space at Glynn Place Mall? Fans of the Waycross store are excited, others are curious what it even is, and the bigger question might be what this could mean for the future of the mall itself. We dive into the conversation locals are having right now.

Volunteers Help Beautify Veterans Village — and Soon It Will Help Feed Veterans Too

A group of local volunteers recently rolled up their sleeves at Golden Isles Veterans’ Village for a landscaping project that is already making a visible difference around the property.

The effort brought together the Magnolia Garden Club, Keep Golden Isles Beautiful, Golden Isles College & Career Academy students, and residents of the village itself. Working side by side, the team planted 28 trees and five shrubs throughout the property, including improvements around the Blue Star Memorial, which honors members of the Armed Forces.

Beyond the beautification, I hear that the project has an even bigger goal ahead. Organizers say plans are underway to begin planting vegetable gardens on-site, allowing the village to grow fresh food that can help support veterans living there.

It’s a simple but powerful idea: community volunteers helping create both a more beautiful space — and a more self-sustaining one — for the men and women who served.

Lucas Center Receives $30K Grant to Help Local Entrepreneurs Launch Businesses

The Lucas Center for Entrepreneurship in Brunswick has received a $30,000 grant from the Terry Thomas Foundation to help remove a surprisingly common barrier for new business owners: access to a computer.

The funding will be used to install dedicated entrepreneur workstations at all three Lucas Center locations, each equipped with computers, printer/scanner access, and full internet connectivity. The goal is simple — make it possible for anyone with a business idea to complete the essential online steps required to start a company, including registering a business entity, filing for an EIN, and obtaining a business license.

The grant also helps the organization reach a major milestone. The funding completes a $300,000 matching commitment tied to a three-year $150,000 grant from the St. Marys Methodist Church Foundation, effectively doubling the impact of that earlier award.

According to Lucas Center CEO Ande Noktes, the investment reflects the foundation’s belief that opportunity shouldn’t depend on what resources someone already has.

The new workstations are expected to be available beginning March 30. Since launching, the Lucas Center has served more than 1,250 entrepreneurs through programs like Idea Bootcamp, ACCELER8, and 6SEED, along with its mentoring network aimed at helping founders build businesses along the Georgia coast.

Brunswick’s Pinball Palace Wins National Pop-A-Shot Contest

Some local pride — and a lot of votes — helped put Brunswick’s Pinball Palace on the national map this week.

The arcade was announced as the winner of the “Your Bar Needs a Pop-A-Shot” contest, beating out other venues around the country to earn their own Pop-A-Shot Elite basketball game. Nearly 9,000 votes were cast during the competition as fans rallied behind their favorite game rooms.

Many Lantern readers joined the effort after the contest was shared in the newsletter, doing our part to push our Brunswick arcade to the top.

For those who haven’t visited yet, The Pinball Palace has quietly become one of the region’s coolest retro hangouts — packed with rows of classic and modern pinball machines, arcade games, and now soon a Pop-A-Shot challenge to add to the fun.

Congrats to the team at Pinball Palace… and to all the locals who helped vote them into victory. Brunswick just scored another reason to stop in and play a few games. 🏀
