Residents in Brunswick’s South of Gloucester (SoGlo) neighborhood are raising renewed concerns about air quality and late-night industrial noise, adding to longstanding odor issues historically linked to the Georgia-Pacific plant.

In recent years, residents report increased dust and debris in the air, along with intermittent but disruptive nighttime noise described as sounding like jet engines, diesel machinery, or snow-making equipment. These newer complaints are increasingly being attributed to activity at the Logistec facility at the Port of Brunswick’s East River Terminal, located at the southern edge of the city.

The facility, owned by the Georgia Ports Authority and operated by Logistec, handles bulk commodities such as wood pellets, animal feed, fertilizer, urea, perlite, and salt. Logistec reported a 37% increase in business activity in 2024, moving approximately 1.4 million tons of material through the site.

Residents have pointed to prior safety and environmental concerns at the facility, including a major warehouse fire in May 2021 caused by heat buildup in stored wood pellets. Similar pellet-dust-related fires have been documented at other ports in past years. More recently, residents near the South End have noted that dust levels appear to have steadily increased over the past four years.

While some of the recent noise has been attributed to Georgia-Pacific restarting operations after a cold weather shutdown, SoGlo residents say the sound appears to originate closer to the port—and complaints began before the extended freeze.

Next Steps for Residents

City Commissioner Lance Sabbe has encouraged residents to document issues using the Glynn Environmental Coalition’s air quality reporting form, which allows submissions for odors, visible pollutants, and noise. Officials are seeking at least three months of data to compare reports with industrial activity at the port.

The coalition’s executive director, Rachael Thompson, is scheduled to speak at the next Historic Brunswick Neighborhood Planning Assembly meeting. Plans are also underway to form a resident working group to track complaints and follow up with agencies to ensure concerns are addressed.
