Brunswick Weighs Citywide Surveillance Camera Network

Brunswick’s finance committee has given preliminary approval to a proposed citywide surveillance camera network that would place 57 cameras around the city, funded largely by a $978,450 state public safety grant. The agreement still requires final approval from the Brunswick City Commission.

The plan is a three-way partnership between Brunswick, Axon Enterprises, and Georgia Power. In addition to the cameras, the funding would cover 66 new street lights and the electrical infrastructure to support them. Each camera site would include both a standard security camera and a license plate recognition (LPR) camera.

Assistant City Manager Jeremiah Bergquist told the finance committee that camera feeds would route directly into the countywide 911 dispatch center, forming a “real-time crime data center” designed to help police, firefighters, and EMTs respond more quickly and with better situational awareness. He noted that even short delays in officer response can mean missing key details such as suspect vehicles.

The Brunswick Police Department, which already uses Axon equipment for tasers and body cameras, would operate within strict access and audit controls. Bergquist emphasized that the cameras are exterior-only, will not look into homes, and will focus primarily on business areas. All data would be encrypted and access tightly tracked.

Mayor Cosby Johnson voiced support for the unified system, while Commissioner Felicia Harris raised questions about privacy and requested a full list of proposed camera locations before the plan returns to the commission. Bergquist said those locations are not finalized and remain open to community input.

A similar camera network is already in use by the Glynn County Police Department, which officials say has already aided in solving at least one homicide.

The City Commission is expected to take up the agreement and grant at a future meeting.

Zoning & Growth Conversations Head to SSI This Month

Two more public meetings on proposed changes to Glynn County’s zoning ordinances and subdivision regulations are coming to St. Simons Island, giving island residents a chance to see what’s being considered—and to speak up.

Earlier meetings held on the mainland in Brunswick drew small crowds, but the topics raised were big ones: growth, drainage, traffic, and how rural and residential areas are changing. County officials expect similar concerns from SSI residents, especially as the island continues to feel development pressure.

Among the proposed changes up for discussion:

  • Smaller minimum lot sizes in some areas to support workforce housing

  • New parking requirements for short-term rentals and four-bedroom homes

  • Updates to tree protection rules, including stricter limits on removing large live oaks

  • Clarified marsh and wetlands buffers

  • New rules for accessory dwelling units (ADUs)

  • Updated regulations for livestock and backyard animals

  • Revisions to sign, billboard, and site coverage requirements

  • New traffic study thresholds and development plan language

The meetings will be held January 12, from 2–4 p.m. and again from 6–8 p.m., in Room 108 at the Casino Building, 550 Beachview Drive.

If zoning, growth, or the future shape of SSI matters to you, this is one of those rare moments where showing up early can actually make a difference.
